On October 18, 1969 The Temptations were at No.1 on the US charts with their single I Can’t Get Next To You. This had been the group’s second No.1 single. This single knocked The Archies‘ single Sugar, Sugar from the number 1 spot.
I Can’t Get Next To You was also one of the best-selling singles that the group ever released and influenced many other popular hit songs. ABCM, a song released in the following year by fellow Motown act The Jackson Five, uses the same bridge section, featuring identifiable use of the stated “ya!” as well as the percussion.
